This resource provides information on the states where the Stavvy platform supports both remote online notarization (RON) and in-person electronic notarization (IPEN). Additionally, we have linked resources for onboarding electronic notaries in these supported states.
Electronic Notary Readiness
This section provides an overview of the notary requirements for electronic notarization using the Stavvy platform.
Obtain the state-required notarial commission. To begin, you'll need a valid notarial commission from your eligible state. Each state has its own requirements and application, which you will need to fulfill in order to obtain a notarial commission. For detailed information, please contact the applicable state notarial authority, such as the office of the Secretary of State or a similar agency.
Obtain an electronic notarial commission. Each state has its own additional requirements and regulations for electronic notarizations. In addition to obtaining the state notarial commission, you may be required to:
- Apply or register to perform electronic notarizations in addition to traditional notarizations
- Pay additional application fees
- Complete training and testing related to electronic notarizations
- Submit an exemplar document
- Sign their documents electronically with an image of their hand-drawn signature
- Verify your approval status
Download a digital certificate. As an electronic notary public, it's essential to use an identity-based digital certificate for digitally signing and sealing each notarized document. You'll need to purchase an IdenTrust digital certificate and associate it with your Stavvy notary profile. Instructions for this process can be found here.
Complete recommended Stavvy platform training. Take advantage of the self-service training platform, StavvyU, to complete your complimentary notary and operations training. Log into StavvyU using your Stavvy platform credentials to begin.
Complete your Stavvy notary profile. Your notary profile is where you'll provide important information. Confirm your notary seal, upload your ID card for credential analysis, verify your signature settings, upload your digital certificate, provide an exemplar document (if your state requires it), and upload proof of your commission. Please ensure your profile is complete before conducting your first RON or IPEN.
