This guide provides step-by-step instructions for completing the ID Verification process during a live session.
- Preparation: Review our ID Verification Requirements before you begin.
- Signer Readiness: To ensure a smooth session, send this article to your client beforehand so they know exactly what to expect.
Notary Instructions: Starting the Process
-
Initiate Verification: Next to the Signer’s name, click Verify, then select Start Verification.
-
Capture Signer Image: A modal will appear. First, take a photo of the Signer holding their ID by clicking the Camera Icon.
-
Save: Once the photo is clear, click Save to proceed. You will receive a success message confirming the start of the process.
-
Monitor Progress: Click Track at any time to open a real-time status modal. This allows you to see the Signer’s progress with their ID scan and Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA) questions.
Tip: If you already know the signer personally and your state allows it, the Personally Known option is available at the bottom left of the tracking modal.
Signer Instructions: Mobile ID Scan
Once the Notary initiates verification, the Signer will see a prompt on their screen.
-
Link Delivery: The Signer must enter a valid US phone number to receive a secure link via SMS.
- If the Signer does not have a US phone number, entering any valid US number will generate a QR Code they can scan with their phone camera instead.
- Getting Started: After tapping the link, the Signer will see a welcome message. The United States is selected by default; they should adjust the country if necessary and click Next Step.
-
Select ID Type: Choose from Driver’s License, State ID, or Passport.
- Selfie Verification: After uploading the ID, the system will prompt the Signer to Take a Selfie to match their face to the ID.
- Submission: Once images are submitted, the Signer will see: "Image Captured. Verification Pending." They may then click Continue to return to the session.
Best Practices for ID Photos
To avoid system rejection, please follow these "Photo Tips":
-
Orientation: Hold the phone in Landscape mode (with the top of the phone facing left). Vertical photos may appear upside down.
- Surface for ID: Place the ID on a dark, flat surface in a well-lit area. Avoid direct overhead lights to prevent glare.
- Surface for Passport: Place the passport cover on a light, flat surface in a well-lit area. Avoid direct overhead lights to prevent glare.
- Framing: Position the camera directly over the ID (not at an angle). Fill the screen, but ensure all four corners of the ID and a small border of the background are visible.
-
Passports: Flatten the document and capture only the bottom photo page. Ensure no glare obscures the text or your photo.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Signer use a paper copy of their ID? No, paper copies are not accepted.
Why is the Signer's photo being rejected? Think of this like a mobile bank deposit. If it fails, try these troubleshooting steps:
- Wipe the camera lens to remove smudges.
- Turn off the camera flash to eliminate glare.
- Ensure the background is dark and the ID is flat.
- Ensure the lighting is natural and not reflecting directly off the ID's plastic surface.
